A pretty good beginning for The End A.D...
Man, this self-titled, self-released five-song EP from the new Philly quintet comprising current and ex-members of Anvil Bitch, Dominance, Deadspot, Shotgun Wedding and Power Theory is an alluringly oddball amalgamation of traditional metal, glam rock swagger, gutter-level punk, deliberate rock ‘n’ roll perversions a la King For A Day... Faith No More and angular, completely-out-of-left-field post-hardcore grooves fronted by a snarly, raspy dude boasting the improbably awesome name Otto Luck and who sounds like Joe Leste of Bang Tango just joined an Overkill tribute band and getting seriously in touch with his inner Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth.

Written out in plain English above that mix reads considerably more incongruous than it actually is when translated into verses, choruses and bridges by the deft and imaginative mad scientist musicians of The End A.D. And, truth is, even if some resolutely obstinate listener wanted to sit around and stew on whether a particular bit of subgenre hopping is valid or not, the marauding velocity and pure effervescent vibe of the record simply will not allow for it. To do so would be like climbing aboard a pirate ship as its inhabitants celebrate a successful raid and reading passages from Eats, Shoots and Leaves in a stern and scolding voice—you’re going to wind up strapped to the mast by your underwear with the most extreme wedgie ever missing out on all the fun. Don’t be an asshole. Go admire some riff-heavy plunder and groovy booty.

“The End A.D. has forged a very fresh sound. It is an exquisite blend of thrash, power, speed and classic metal woven together with a punk attitude and swagger. It’s like a sweet box of chocolate metal.”

Hailing from Philadelphia, PA now comes The End A.D. featuring members from Anvil Bitch, Dominance, Deadspot, Savage Silence, Power Theory and Shotgun Wedding to name a few. This self-titled four song EP is their introduction to the rest of the world.

The disc opens up with "Wendy O" (a tribute to the late/great Wendy O. Williams of Plasmatics fame, I hope?) The band comprised of veteran players are extremely tight as a unit and keep everything in the pocket, so to speak, with their chugging rhythms, breakdowns and solos. "Happy Now" is a fast-paced rocker with a catchy melody and bar room boogie-woogie swing that compliments the more abrasive riffing nicely. Vocalist Otto Luck reminds me a lot of Taime Downe (Faster Pussycat) both in his pitch and overall delivery as first evidenced on "Germs Burn".

"Crawling From The Wreckage" is probably the most pummeling of the five songs on tap with a lot of double-kick fury courtesy of drummer Lorin Savadore building the foundation of thunder for some strange vocal effects employed by vocalist Otto Luck. "Obsession" has a frantic feel to it, a bit of a modern sound and more unorthodox vocal effects. Guitarists Paul Juestrich and John Plumley do a fine job trading off leads on solos on this CD I bet this is a really fun band to catch live.

My copy of the five-song EP is a cardboard promo, so not sure if this is just a stop-gap release until a full-length debut surfaces but either way it's a nice introduction to The End A.D. and I would encourage fans of the aforementioned bands who make-up this group to give them a shot and see what you think!
